On Easter long weekend, my boyfriend and I went on a three day, two nights trip to Ottawa.
I wanted to stay at the Swiss Hotel because the rooms had modern decor and iPads in every room. It wasn’t the typical hotel. However, he decided to book at Lord Elgin Hotel based on its vicinity to Parliament Hill, Byward Market and Rideau Canal. However, his main reason for booking at the Elgin is because of Town, deemed one of Ottawa’s 2012 best restaurant by Ottawa Magazine. An approximate 10 minute walk from our hotel, we went to town on Friday evening, they were completely booked for the evening, but was able to accommodate us for 5:30pm as long as we were done at 7:00pm.
We ordered two appetizers to share.
Top: Chilled Rib Eye with horseradish cream, arugula and pine nuts.
Bottom: Grilled Octopus with grilled red onions, cherry tomatoes, frisée and pig cheek vinaigrette. The octopus was absolutely tender, I don’t think I’ve ever had octopus that delicious as it’s quite easy to turn octopus to a tough rubber mess.
For the main, I ordered the Caccuiuco, which consisted of seared scallops, shrimp, clams, Israeli couscous and pig cheek in a tomato and nduja broth.
Overall, the food was great, especially the grilled octopus. It’s not a good place for large groups since the restaurant is small (and tables are situated close to each other, you’d bump the table beside you trying to get out) however, there’s the comfortable vibe to the place.
