Do you ever expect a vegan restaurant to be located outside of the downtown? I didn’t, but Doug McNish’s Public Kitchen is located where you don’t quite expect it to be.
I used to work near the area and I’ve always found it to be a food desert, nothing good to around the area. A short walk from Glencairn station, Doug McNish’s Public Kitchen is a place where there’s a wait for a table if you didn’t make reservations.
My brother and I took our mom here for Mother’s Day lunch (I know, it’s months ago). She didn’t quite know that there’s something beyond vegetarian, but thankfully she’s quite open to most things.
Triple Decker Brunch Club ($17) – choice of sprouted grain or thornbury gluten-free bread, creamy garlic mayo, cornmeal and fennel seed crusted tomato, crisp smoky sprouted tofu, tempeh bacon, avocado, lettuce and herbed home fries (or house salad).
Shakshuka (this was one of the specials that day, unfortunately not on the regular menu). A tomato stew, I was surprised that the tofu egg was made to look like a sunnyside up. In fact, the “yolk” was runny. Mind blown? Very. Watch the “yolk” pop!
